I just bought a second-hand pc, with winxp pro on it, and it requires a
username and password (I assume) to log on. It first asks me to press
control/alt/del, which I do, then I change it to log on to 'this computer',
instead of the network it use to be part of. Is there a trick to get to
windows? Thanks.

You need to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP.
