IFRAME and slow-as-molasses progress bar

My (intranet) aspx page finishes loading in less than a second, but the
progress bar continues to advance very very very slowly, i.e. a new chunk on
the bar is added after about 5 seconds, and then another few chunks are
added with 10 or 15 seconds between each, but then the progress bar stops
about halfway and never gets any further.

The page uses a hidden IFRAME to fetch data from a database, and contents
from the IFRAME are copied over into a DIV on the page, which is then made
visible. The database fetch and the copy from IFRAME to page-DIV occurs in
a fraction of a second.

I've seen similar questions about this IFRAME-related behavior on other
sites, but no answers.

Thanks for any help or suggestions on what may be causing this behavior and
how I might fix it (if its not an IE bug).

Exactly the same problem than Timo, with the same mechanism concerning
the datas redirection (from an IFRAME to a DIV), but in a J2EE
environment on the server side.
