[Jim Rhodes]

I have recently upgraded from ME to XP Home. After installation, all seemed
ok. After a few uses, I noticed that the LOG OFF button is gone. I've tried
everything to get it turned back on. Especially the <R>click <Start>
Properties - advanced. I can't find the option anywhere. I tried the
classic windows menu, and the option isn't listed there, either. (This is on
ALL LEVELS of USERS and not on the shut down screen either)

Where oh where did my LOG OFF button go?

You're right, I couldn't find where this setting is located. Used to be there.

The easy way;
Download and install tweakui:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

General tab check the Allow Log Off on start menu

Do you have the Tweak UI Powertoy installed? If so, run it and select
Explorer in the left tree view. With Explorer selected, look at the list on
the right and make sure that "Allow Logoff on the Start menu" is checked.

If you don't have Tweak UI installed, you can get it from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe.

ok, installed TweakUI, found the explorer setting, the box for LOG OFF was
already checked. I unchecked it, applied, closed, rebooted. Then went
through same process and re-checked the box, applied, closed, and rebotted it
again. LOG OFF button still not present. I'm using the admin acount to make
the changes. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary.

Any other ideas?

I can only guess, but do you have other user accounts on your system? Maybe
if you only have the Administrator the Log Off would not show.

Like I said, only a guess.

That can't be it because I have no user accounts and am the administrator, I
don't log in either and I have the Log Off choice when I click on Start.

OK then, more guessing ;-)

Hopefully your install isn't corrupted or possibly some type of virus.

I found some things in Services that you might check. On my system these
are all started.

Secondary Logon
Fast User Switching Compatibility
Security Accounts Manager
Windows User Mode Driver Framework.

Another question, if you start Task Manager do you have a Log Off option
under the shutdown menu? Under Users, do you have a log off option there?
If you hit Winkey+L what happens?

Do you have "Fast User Switching" enabled?

OK, it is late so I did not research this completely, but I got this from
the Help and Support section.

In the Group Policy Snap-in, there are entries to control the Log Off
button. You might go check it out.

Start-Run-gpedit.msc
Go to Admin Templates-Start Menu & Taskbar
Look for Add Logoff and Remove Logoff entries. Select them and check out
the descriptions. Right click for properties to change.
