Photo Story 3 / XP Plus DM Edidiont and VCDs

Following the advice on the Photo Story 3 web page I installed XP Plus DM
Edition, and updated it to the current rev. The option on the menu for the
Plus edition of Photo Story does now show the option to open a project to
burn a VCD. However it simply will not recognize or open anything created
with Photo Story 3. I've created a project, saved it as well as created a
..mwv file (suggested as the way to export a file into a program that can
create a VCD).

What am I missing here?
TIA,
Bruce

Here's something you could try...
When creating a Photo Story in
version 3.....on the screen that is titled....
"Add Background Music"...there's a
button that says, "Save Project".

This option allows you to create a .wp3
file that can be reopened later in Photo
Story 3 for further editing.

OK...since version 2 creates a file with
the .psc extension...the PS3 files are not
compatible. However...if you rename the
PS3 file from xxxx.wp3 to xxxx.psc...you
should be able to open and edit the PS3
file in PS2.

You will see a dialog that states,
"The selected project was created by
using a newer version of Photo Story.
The project will open, but certain features
might not be displayed correctly.

There may be a better way to do this but
I have not discovered it.

Good luck.

Thank you for the reply John. I followed your instructions, and got to the
point where I got the "previous version" message as you said. However after
that point nothing happened - the program did not open - things just stopped.

Based on the info on the PS3 web site I would certinaly expect MS to have a
way to do this without a one-off work around.

Looking for suggestions....
Thanks,
Bruce

Sorry...it worked for me.

Maybe your best bet would be to
create the project with PS2.

Another hack I found some time ago for PS2 was to trick its VCD making
engine to encode any WMV file (even those not made by PS2) to produce
VCDs. I am fairly confident (though not tried) that it will work for WMV
files made by PS3 also.

Thanks for the replies above - I'll give the trick a shot this evening -
looked at the website and I understand what you are suggesting.

What really bothers me is that it clearly states on the Photo Story 3
website the following:

"..You can obtain Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition and view the Photo
Story 3-authored WMV file in Photo Story 2 by going to Play your story or
create a video CD of your story and then create a VCD.using the Photo Story 2
Video CD-burning feature."

It's black and white - no hacks required, and yet no one (yet) seems to have
been able to do this. I know PS3 was a free download, but Plus DM was a
purchase - is there any official MS support location where I can get any
assistance?

Thanks again,
Bruce

I just tried putting 10 PS3 stories in the folder that PS2 uses when viewing
a story or creating a VCD... none of them appeared in the list with the
stories created by PS2.

This is the first I've heard of that option and my first test shows it'll
only work if you trick it like Rehan did... make a PS2 story and then put
the PS3 story in it's place in the folder, using the same file name. At
least it then played the PS3 story... I didn't try burning a disc, but
assume it will from that point.

A problem with this method is that the properties of the story are assumed
to be the same as the PS2 story it replaced. I used a 60 second story in
place of a 5 second one, and WMP shows it with a duration of 5 seconds...
but plays it completely.

Thanks PapaJohn - I can confirm you are correct - while the hack will appear
to load the story, it renders any customization useless (and defeats the
purpose of using PS3).

So....guess I'm still looking for "official" MS help on something that is
supposed to work - any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bruce

My guess is they would change the wording of the Q&A page... and you need to
use other software to get the story to disc.

I hope not - or if so I would hope I could use that to get a refund on the
money spent on XP Plus DM, as it has no other value to me - that would be
frustrating.

To whom could I address this issue (offically at MS)?

Thanks,

I picked up a copy of XP Plus - Digital Media Edition locally (Frys) - not a
big deal, $30 - but the issue I raise is that I did so specfically so I could
use PS3 (which is great by the way) and create VCDs. There isn't anything
else in Plus DME that is of interest.

I'd be very happy with any method that would allow me to create VCDs with
PS3 - not set on XP Plus - I went that route because it was the least
expensive of the MS alternatives on the above mentioned link - I do own MS
Digital Image suite, but it's version 9. If version 10 (as on the same web
page) will work for VCDs, and you want to provide an upgrade to that product,
I'm just as happy with that solution.

Not trying to make a mountain out of molehold - please understand - just
believe that it a purchase of a MS product is documented on a MS website as a
viable solution (and isnt') then MS should make it right one way or another -
I know my local store won't take the software back once it is opened.

Thanks!
Bruce

You have a 30 day return guarantee from
Microsoft on boxed retail software. The
following site will explain how it works...they
also provide an allowance for postage.

I think every possible solution has been discussed
for creating PS3 VCDs and it appears that you
are having no success. Not much more we can
do about that.

When you installed Plus! Digital Media Edition
with VCD burning...it should have updated the
link in Digital Image Library 9. And...Digital
Image Library 10 also has the VCD option.
However...you will be using PS2...not PS3.

If you happen to have Nero...you should be able
to create VCDs from PS3 .wmv files with it.

Thank John - I know of the guarantee - to be candid it's not worth the hassle
with this particular vendor - they don't have a lot of interest in customer
satisfaction and to them open box means it's sold, and any issues can be
brought to the vendor, not them.

As I said it's not such a big, deal, but I remain very interested in a way
to produce VCDs - and of course I'm very interested in how the info about
Plus got on the website - someone must have tried it to put it there - no?

Thanks,

Forget the vendor...the refund comes directly from
Microsoft. The open box is not a problem...that's
what the guarantee is meant to cover. I've used the
service before and the check...including a postage
allowance was sent soon after they received the
returned software. You can even call an 800 number
if you have questions.

It's looking like all you really wish to do is complain.
Apparently you're not even taking the time to view
the sites I posted for you. If it's too much of a hassle...
forget it!

There was a mistake made...it happens...use the
site I posted for you and report it to Microsoft.

Wow - all I can say is that I thought we were having a nice exchange of info,
but with due respect, your last reply was way out of line and quite uncalled
for.

For your info I did look at the web sites you posted, and I did try the
"hack" you suggested. The whole purpose of my post was to find out how to
create a VCD. Unless I missed something there was NOT ONE WORD on those web
sites with regard to my inquiry.

I've been quite low key about my irritation that MS posted info on the web
site that (apparently) is not accurate. I've also said a lot of very
positive things about PS3 - it's a great little utility - only looking for a
solution to one problem - doesn't mean I don't like it for what it does do
(well), and I've said so.

So.....I'm not "just wishing to complain" - I'm looking for an answer to a
specific issue and you have not pointed me to that answer.

Unless you have something constructive to add, and it does not involve a
personal attack please do not reply. I'll get assistance elsewhere.

Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce,

For what it's worth, I filled out the form on the website John provided the

Hi Bruce, I have created a VCD using Photo Shop Photo Album 5. See
www.corel.com for details.

This application lets you create a slide show (or shows) and then create a
VCD from the slide show set. Each slide show in the set becomes a "chapter"
on the VCD. IMO, it's a little way off from being a completed product and
the associated sound track management could do with some additional work but
the basic functionality of displaying say holiday snaps on your TV is there.

Hope this helps, have fun!
