4Gb Microdrive in notebook: hot to make it appear as a fixed HDD?

XP Home/Dell Inspiron 8200: I run Photoshop on this machine for field work,
and there is no way to install a 2d internal HDD. When I connect an external
drive via USB or 1384 these appear as fixed drives and I can use them as
scratchdisks. But a Microdrive will not appear in the list of selectable
scratchdisks, ostensibly because it is removable. I got no improvement when I
partitioned the original HDD to put scratch on logical 'D' because the Win
pagefile is still on C. Worse if both page and scratch are set to 'D'. Can
anybody tell me how to tell Windows that the drive is fixed and not
removable? The drive appears in Device Manager under "disk drives' when
inserted. I imagine it's a setting or registry tweak but I am now officially
out of my depth. Appreciate any help that might be out there.
