Hi jess,
I suggest you boot in to Safe Mode first.
If this issue stopped ,you may do a clean boot.

please refer to follwing ariticle:

hi again,
When I try to use the search on my start menu my pc freezes up. and the
search part will not come up to search for files and folders. Can this be
related to my not being able to get to sites out-side of the site I'm in.
I've tried lots of this and nothing seems to help. I've typed in the run box
regsvr 32 urlmon.dll. and went
to tools on IE and reset web pages to default. But i'm sure this is not the
problem. Can anyone help me out with is very fluctuating problem. Cause I
use my search a lot
Thanking all who would like to help a BIG Thanks
jess

Since it may be caused by some third-party software, Safe Mode and Clean
boot could help to narrow down the issue, why not try?

One think you can try Jess would be:
reboot the system,
click start
run
and type: %temp%
Delete everything you can or the system allows you
reoppen IE and test it!!
If doesn't it wont harm your pc, just delete all your temporal rubish.
