No Internal Speakers sound

I have lost internal-speakers sound on my IBM Thinkpad 600X which had
been working fine for years. However, I do get sound from the earphone
jack.
Obviously, this could be a hardware problem, but I'd like to rundown
possible software causes first.
The built-in troubleshooter doesn't address my condition.
My 600X is a WIN98SE upgraded to WINXP Home Edit.
I don't know how long I've had the problem as I just noticed it
recently. And, I don't know what I may have done to cause it.

Do the following: Rightclick the volume icon next to clock, bottom righthand
corner
and click Open Volume Control. See if anything is Muted. If it is, uncheck
it and
that should solve it. If nothing is Muted, go here and check the first item:

some days you're the bug.

Been there; done that.
