AC'97 sound problem

When I look in the "Sounds and Audio devices" screens of the control panel,
it tells me that there is no audio device installed. When I look in the
"Device Manager" section of the system properties, I see the all devices and
they report "This device is working properly".
I have tried to uninstall/reinstall the audio drivers, but that did not make
any difference.
Has anybody a hint how to make the audio device visible for "Sounds and
Audio devices"?
