I have a PC running XP Pro, and the names of the two HDDs in this system
have been changed.
However PCs on the network still pick-up the old names when browsing the
network. The other PCs are running either XP Pro or W98.
Why is this?

Other PCs on the network see the share names that you've assigned to
the HDDs, not the HDD names. Change the share names to match the new
HDD names.
