XP Slow shutdown

It seems my new computer with XP is taking longer and longer to shut
down. From the time I click on shut down, till it's ready to turn off
is 30 seconds. It used to be a lot quicker.
What's slowing it down?

Do any tweaking?
Look up the registry key to clear the pagefile at shutdown and make sure it
is set NOT to do that.

You may have many processes and background programs running. These take time
to gracefully terminate. You may also have a poorly written program running
that does not want to be terminated. The system may have to send many
requests before it will happen.
