I have a friend who runs windows 98, and she has a virus, Will completly
reformatting clear this out too? It was a second hand tower, and she wants
it cleared, If this does work, what would be necessary for me to install win
XP on her system? She has no installation software for it at all. Any
suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Leanna

Impossible to say without knowing what virus she belives is on there. There
are some that cannot be removed with just a format. As always, the best tool
for removing a virus is an antivirus tool (http://www.f-prot.com/ - f-prot
for DOS is a good free virus scanner that can be used with Win 98 computers
to ensure they're clean).

Well she'll need a XP licence and the XP installation software. Also to make
sure the computer is XP compatible - e.g. enough disk space, memory, drivers
available for everything...

If she can't prove she's entitled to use an upgrade copy of XP (which will
either want to upgrade a currently installed version of windows OR see the
install disks for the current copy of Windows) then she'll need the full
version rather than an upgrade version.

install updates if available.

If you format the hard drive completely the virus is removed.
