I am a home user, so I apologise in advance if I am address the wrong
newsgroup; if I am, can you point me in the right direction.

I just went an overhaul of my system and in doing so opted for a new C
drive. I re-installed Windows XP Pro SP2 seemingly with no problems until
the first re-boot. Here are the symptoms

1) The system goes thru all the BIOS settings fine.
2) It then displays the WinXP flash screen (the one with the scrolling blue
bar) for a couple of seconds and then the screen goes blank (but the monitor
doesn't go into sleep mode even though there is nothing being displayed.
3) The hard drives stop reading for any data.
4) The system then just sits there sucking its thumb for just over three
minutes.
5) It then continues as if nothing had happened.

At first I thought this might be down to the absence of a floppy disk drive
(I decided to ditch it since I haven't used a floppy in a LONG time). I
disabled the floppy settings in the BIOS and disabled the floppy disk
controller in Windows Device Manager, but there is still the same delay in
booting up.

Any advice at solving this problem is appreciated.

NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 (with up-to-date drivers)
80 & 30 GB Hard Drives
Samsung CD-R/RW SW-240B
Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8585
*No* Floppy Disk Drive

Well after I upgraded my ram from 512 to 1024 my computer ran faster and I
got to everything quicker except well what?
You guessed it my boot time. It takes longer to boot now.

somewhere on MS's site they have a boot analyzer that you can run and it
tells you what is taking time to startup, etc. I don't know if it is active
at that part of the boot but you could give it a try.
