Im installing a copy of windows xp pro, during istall of files i keep getting
these messages saying cant install file this or that for example and this is
one of the files cant install file wpdusb.sys press enter to retry. I try the
retry but it does not install the file. It does this on lots of different
files. I have the option to press esc and skip the file but I dont think this
is a good idea. WHy is this happening. I tried formatting the HDD, I tried
upgrading from win me. same issues when trying to install xp pro. I have two
copies and no its not the disk. Can you tell me what is going on
If it isn't the disc, it's probably your CD-ROM drive...

I know its a very silly question: is one disk a copy of the other? Or
are they both from a backed-up ISO?

I had a disk that did that once. Always refused to install merlin.acs,
of all files!! I could skip, then re-install MS Agent etc later from
the WWW. Its a damaged disk, I'm afraid. I believe wpdusb.sys is for
removable storage drives. If you haven't got one, you could try
skipping, but you might run into another bad file, or there may be a
dependancy there that will fail. If it is the only one that fails, you
should be able to download it of t'internet.

If two new disks both exhibit the same behaviour, then you're probably
right that they're not to blame. The stable factor in this is the
machine. Its possible there's a problem with your CD-ROM drive, but if
its the same files every time, then bad sectors on your hard drive,
that cannot be written to, is infinitely more likely, as the same
install on the same hard disk will almost certainly try to put the same
files in same physical location each time.

....so try a thorough (sp.?) scandisk, surface the lot. Then find
something to keep yourself occupied for a long while!
