Recent computer installations have my users' mice resetting the mouse
pointer to the center of the screen every time something on-screen changes.
Is there a setting to stop this?

ok you probably have your mouse set to go to default status

go into control panel and configure your mouse properties
for example I have my mouse configured to just point and a mouse hand comes
out instead of double click and so forth settings good luck

Some pre-built systems come with a tool that will move the mouse cursor
to the focus. Check your startup items.
