Everytime I start my computer, it looks to be goin fine then the desktop
background loads but nothing else. All i can do is open task manager. When i
try to do a system restore it crashes about a fifth of the way along.

Any ideas???

Probably the next step is to try a Repair Install if you have a WinXP
CD. Check here and pay close attention to Step 3
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If that works Ok first thing you should do is clean your system of
Malware. Use all of these free sites
