I installed XP Pro fine on my grandfathers machine and forgot i had to
register it, but it wouldn't allow the key, saying that it's 'mistyped', but
it's what it says on the back. So i did a clean install on a new partition
(formatted fully as NTFS) and i got as far as inputing product key, which it
said is 'invalid'. It's confusing me somewhat, any ideas on what i could do
or what could be wrong?

Forgot to mention that i also tried to instal his prior copy of 98se, but
that product key comes up as being 'not valid' as well...

The key on the back of his system will be an OEM product key. Did his system
come shipped with Windows XP? If so, you should use the recovery media
provided with his system to recover it, or you will need to use a product
key provided with, and media for, a retail version of Windows XP.
