Windows XP Windows Update

OS:Win XP - SP2
On running windows update I receive an error 80072efd, I have checked out
the microsoft help but nothing seems to work. NB I have Norton Internet
Security 2005 although changing features on the firewall have not helped
Please help me
There's a known issue with ICF and Norton's 2005 (and previous versions). MS
reckons to uninstall Norton's, or turn off your ICF. Take your pick because
they're like two kids fighting over the same toy (resources) and you've got
to seperate them somehow.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I have already tried disabling Norton while updating and it
hasn't made any difference

I'm not sure that simply disabling Norton (the auto protect icon) will
do it. Seems to me there is other stuff still running of Norton's. Deb
made the comment on the "uninstall" and that may be the answer -
see the Symantec site for complete uninstall instructions -- Norton is
NOT simple to remove -- just went through that on my laptop.
Uninstall is NOT clean. For 2003 anyway, first you do the normal
start->programs->Norton->remove. Then you go back and remove
another couple of chunks. Then you go in with their special tool and
it removes another couple of chunks (and I do use the word chunks).
That thing is like trying to keep a weeping willow tree's roots out of
your drainage system. What a pain !! I replaced NAV with NOD32
on a trial basis, but others seem to like f-prot and others also. Norton
does not play nice any more - used to work well. Not sure I would
un-install just to run windows update if turning off ICF would also
work as Deb suggested, but be aware, NAV has it's fingers in
EVERYTHING

Thanks for all the Norton stuff and I am sure it works but I am just confused
as Windows Update worked fine with NIS2005 for ages and just suddenly has
gone wrong now and I am not sure what has caused it and how to fix the problem
Thanks,
Thomas

Its possible that there was an update to NIS that's causing the issue. The error that you're getting indicates that it is an issue with the firewall settings, or one of the other causes listed in the various articles.
