Computer Freezing!

Ok, i really need help with this. i had a virus on my computer from 2001 that
destroyed about 1500 files and took out my task manager along with other
things that generally royally screweed my computer. i worked with people from
microsoft to try to get task manager back for about a month and a half and
they weren't able to help me. eventually they told me to just reformat my
hard drive and start over.

It took me about 10 tries to re-instal windows and format my hard drive
because whenever i tried to do that, my computer would freeze at about
50%-80% of "preparing windows instalation." It would also freeze in the
middle of trying to reformat the hard drive. when i would run Trend Micro's
House call it would again freeze up, and when i would go to run, type in "SFC
/Scannow" it would freeze up also.

I have since reformated my hard drive and reinstalled windows but my
computer still freezes up like before whenever i play a movie, dvd, or try to
burn a CD (using Nero software), and some other times that i dont really know
how to explain.

Recently i opened task manager and went to performance just to check it out
and i noticed that my CPU usage would be between 60%-100% right before it
freezes. Right now i have five windows open and my usage is at 4%. However,
when i clicked on the button to post this message (the New question/reply
button) it took a long time to bring up and my CPU Usage jumped to about 90%.

Under processes, my System Idle Process is constantly in the 90's, and
almost always 98 or 99.

I have AntiVir, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Microsft AntiSpyware programs all
running and currently updated, and i just ran a Trend Micro House call and i
came up clean. However, yesterday i tried to run a House Call and my computer
froze.

I have an AMD Athlon Processor, 1.24 GHz, 256 Mb of Ram (I tried putting in
an extra 256 Mb to see if that solved it and it did not) and 40Gb hard drive,
with Windows XP Pro w/SP2.

Someone for the love of god please help me. this is driving me insane and i
dont know if my motherboard is shot to hell, or if i need a new CPU or if i
still have a virus some how. please help me...please.........please.........

My PC was doing this just before the hard drive stopped working. It was like
it was trying really hard to get the data off it.
could also explain why it froze during the reformat.
