Slow startup for Win XP Pro

I added a scanner and programs this last week. I then used msconfig to check
and see if the new programs added any items to startup that I didn't want. I
didn’t find anything there that I was not expecting. However, about 2/3 of
the way down there was an item that did not have anything in the startup item
column, nothing in the command column, and in the location column was
“HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVerison\Run”.
This line had been there a long time. Long and short of it is that I
un-checked this item and re-booted. Right away it became apparent there was a
problem. The normal startup time before this was about 35-40 seconds. This
startup took over 3 ½ minutes. When I could, started msconfig, and then went
to startup to re-check the line and it was gone. I have Norton Go Back and
used it. After Go Back was done, I checked and the line was back in startup.
I then re-started, and when after I logged on, the startup processes was back
to the 35-40 seconds. Later, I shut down the computer. The next day when I
logged on again, it was back to the slow, 3 ½ minute startup process and has
been that way ever since. After I get through the startup process, the
computer runs normal.

I don’t believe it is a virus or trojan. I use NAV, Zone Alarm Pro and both
AD Aware and Spybot. I also ran Norton and checked the registry and it found
a couple of minor errors and they were fixed, but it is still very slow on
startup.

Home built system: Win XP Pro, Athlon 64, 3000, MIS K8N Nero 4 board, 1028
dual channel ram, ATI 600 all in wonder video card, 2 x 120 GB SATA main
drives- Raid 0, 1 ATA 160 GB, one ATA 16x DVD internal writer- +-, one
external 160 GB USB hard drive, one external 8x DVD firewire drive.

I made a copy of C:\ shortly after I put the computer together. I am about
ready to copy it back and see what happens, but if I don’t have too, that
would be great. I have already had to reactivate Windows XP once because of
adding devices and I really don’t want to have to deal with MS again. Thanks.
