I have similar problems. In fact I've never really seen a machine that will
consistantly go into standby mode. So let me ask, is there any way to know if
a machine has tried to go into standby mode and if so, what is preventing a
machine from entering standby mode.

Nvidia video display drivers cause it.
Get a new video card if yours is nvidia.
