Anyone Seen the MSN Spyware PAge?

Have been getting a pulsing yellow triangle with an exclamation in it in my
Systray, several times per day and no Spyware app finds it or indentifies
it. Clicked, it brings-up an MSN adware page for 'security apps',.. Anyone
else seen this annoying piece of crap on their System?

No. Visit the Windows Update web site, download any available
critical updates, then reboot your computer.

Thanks, and i have most of those apps running, none of this shows-up with
any scan and downloading 'hotfixes' is where I believe this crap came
from...Certainly with the gigantic number of 'security fixes' Micrososft has
issued I can only believe they are way behind in their effort to 'secure' XP
from anything that wants to load....I have had XP Pro since it came on the
market; it used to be a great OS, since hackers have found ways to mess with
it, by the hundreds, it is obvious what a flawed product it really is.
(Please, no MVP cheerleading here)

Hopefully, the next build of whatever Redmond sells to the world will show
they learned something. I do not enjoy playing with several, no, many apps
and endless troubleshooting and registry searches to get rid of stuff that
slows, modifies and generally screws with many aspects of the XP experience.
Reminds me of Windows 98SE......

What exactly is the title and contents of this page?
If you look at running tasks when you bring this up - what is running?
Have you ran your AntiSpyware Applications in Safe Mode?
Have you looked through your Add/Remove Programs control panel for unknown
software that might explain this?
Did you download and install the Beta Microsoft AntiSpyware at anytime?

Why is this silly? It the only way to remove some spyware. Even in safe mode
some spyware can hide. Download HijackThis and post your log to one of the
many forums dedicated to it. A good one is at http://aumha.net/

Okay - Sounds right..

I suppose you mean I am silly to ask such a thing - except this is standard
operating procedure and many people do not know it.

This is good.

I think this is good as well (having not gotten it), but "not likely" is not
a very definite answer for something as difficult to get as MS AntiSpyware.
hehe

So.. I did a simple google search for :
yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in system tray brings up antivirus
advertisements

And I came up with the web page above that probably shows something similar
to what you are seeing and a whole forum topic about getting rid of this
with HijackThis and SilentRunners and getting rid of certain entries (See
the responses by YellowHammer) - which may be similar (but not necessarily
the same) as what you have.

http://castlecops.com/t121489-help_flashing_yellow_triangle_in_taskbar.html

See if that works for you.. Sounds like what you got - which is adware.

I believe this could have been prevented with immunizations from Spybot
Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster and IE-SpyAd along with the Browser
Helper from Spybot....

Out of all the Antispyware applications out there, all I use consistently
are:

- Spybot Search and Destroy
- LavaSoft AdAware
- Bazooka Scanner
- SpywareBlaster
- IE SpyAd

And only in problem cases:

- HijackThis!
- SilentRunners

You have reached the "problem case" stage. *grin*

YES, Shehan, that url you included IS the popup/throbber I am getting
constantly.... Thanks for identifying it.. I didn't know how to link it
here, someday I will figure that out.. You must be getting this also(?)... I
appreciate your effort.....Now the question is, where did it come from and
how to locate it in the registry etc....

The answer was in Shenan's post. Scoll down and go to the castlecops.com

Thanks, Many THANKS to Shenan, Kerry et al.... I haven't done away with it
yet, but I did get Spybot and it found some stuff my other apps didn't..I
run Trend Micro AV and firewall, have a Linksys Firewall Router, Adaware,
Webroot SpSweeper also.. So I have added Spybot to my list..Eventually we
all learn something on this Forum; like me.
