Network connection status not working

Whenever I right click a network connection icon, in 'Network Connections',
and select 'Status', nothing happens. I have 3 such icons: 'Internet
Connection', 'Local Area Connection' and '1394 Connection' and all fail to
respond. 'Properties' does work on all of them. What could be missing from
my installation to cause this?

Look for relevant messages in Event Viewer. To run it, click Start |
Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools |
Event Viewer. For more information, see:

The event viewer does not show any event related to this failure and the
time thereof.

Does it show anything happening earlier, such as a system service
terminating abnormally or being unable to start?
