Aiight, here's what's happened twice to two XP machines within the last two
weeks.
The facts:
1. they both have a static IPs
2. They've both been online without a reboot for over 3 months
3. DNS is set to scavenge at 7 days
4. I can give more info as needed
ANYWAY, the problem is that suddenly the computers had stopped responding to
NetBIOS resolution. Try to RDP to the machines and they won't answer except
via IP address.
Today, the one machine wouldn't respond to NetBIOS pinging, responded to IP
pinging, and again, I could RDP with IP address, but no name. Also, an
NSLOOKUP turned up no record matching the name of the computer.
Ideas as to why? Fixing it was handled with a ipconfig /registerdns
