Windows XP drops Verizon DSL

I have a Dell PC connected directly to Verizon DSL. The PC was upgraded from
ME to XP-Home edition in 2002 and has been working with the same setup since.
For the last two weeks my DSL connection has been dropping off after 15
minutes. I have to restart XP to regain the connection, but I do not have to
power down the modem. I have talked to Verizon tech support 5 times and
they claim there is a conflict with XP. Anyone who can help?

Are you using Verizon's PPPoE software to make the connection?
There's no need of this--the native XP PPPoE can connect to Verizon without
any of the Verizon software installed.
You might set up a connection using the native XP stuff and test that out to
see if it does better:
Start, control panel, network connections
Set up or change your Internet connection
add
connect to the internet via broadband
Give the connection a descriptive name, and put in your Verizon username and
password under the dialup settings. Click on advanced to set it so that it
won't timeout and will auto-connect.

Verizon recently changed the DHCP lease time to 15 minutes. This has
caused problems for some routers and possibly some older modem/router combo
units. There is some discussion in the Verizon news groups about this. You
might take a look there. Depending on what hardware you're using, you may
be able to tweak it or update it to help.
