[Ryanm12]

I just recently got a new computer with XP Media Center Edition. I go to
hook up my home network using a linksys 4 port router and set up the network
as i always do. However, i cannot connect to any other pc and vice versa but
i can see my workgroup in my network places. I ran the network diagnostics
utility and it says my ip address is failing for this computer. I tried
other IPs as well since i manually set my IP addresses and don't use DHCP
because i run a few game servers. Im baffled and not sure how to fix
this....i need to be able to share files! Help me please!

Please provide the exact text of the error seen. Also, please provide "browstat
status" and "ipconfig /all" for both computers. Please follow instructions

Well i ran the browstat utility you told me to run and it says that browsing
is not active in my domain and that it can't get a name from my net adapter.
First of all, im not in a domain and i only set up a workgroup. And second,
how do i turn browsing on? Thanks Chuck!

Ryan,

To browstat, a domain and a workgroup are equal - don't be confused by the fact
that browstat uses the term "domain" a lot.

The error "browsing is not active on domain" can have several causes. Please
read these 3 articles, and follow links where necessary.

OK. Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses). Do you have any other computers? Diagnosing
a problem like yours is easiest with the most possible test cases.

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.
