Hi there,

Escuse my poor english first.
I'll try to explain my problem.

Since I bought a notebook, i decided to use my home pc (ATX tower with WinXP
HE) as a gateway to the internet.

I set-up all ICS parameters. (ICS autonegociate local IP adress to
192.168.0.1)
I set-up all neede IP parameters on the notebook...
I connect the home Pc to the Internet, all works fine...

But when i disconnect my home pc (=gateway) from the internet, both local ip
parameters and ICS settings are reset.

After that, no available gateway on the network, and no possible
communications to the home pc because it tries to autodetermine IP address
from a DHCP server (and i don't want to install some DHCP server)

This problem only appears on Internet disconnect (from home pc & from
notebook).

Tired to configure IP and ICS more than 3 times a day, I made a REG file
which auto-(re)configure IP parameters, but ICS is not (re)enabled (because I
don't know what key must be changed)...

Do you know where does this problem come from, and how to solve it ?
Or do you now how REG key I must change to (re)enable ICS ?

Nicolas,

If you want to know what registry keys are being changed when you activate ICS,
get Process Explorer and Regmon (both free) from SysInternals.

# Start the ICS setup process. Use Process Explorer to tell you the PID of the
ICS setup process.

# Execute the ICS setup process. Look at the output from Regmon.
# Once you identify the registry entries involved, Export them.

Maybe though you'd be better off with a product to help your notebook handle
multiple network setups.

Thanks for those tools, i'll try now...

To correct my mistakes, the notebook has no problem at all. It is the
gateway who has got the problem (which i use as a local & internet http
server). Then all connections are broken until I reconfigure the gateway (and
just by enabling ICS).

Strange! Isn't it ?

Nicolas,

Yes, it's strange. Maybe if you can post "ipconfig /all" from the computer with
the problem, both when connected to the Internet (with proper settings), and
when disconnected from the Internet (with broken settings).

Maybe describing why you are disconnecting the gateway from the network would
help too. Typically, if you're going to use a computer as a gateway, you have
to leave the computer in place. That's one of the disadvantages of using ICS,
and one reason why I always recommend using a NAT router instead.

Nicolas,

Maybe "ipconfig /all" instead of "ipconfig" would give more detail.

But why are you removing the gateway? That's the disadvantage of ICS - the
gateway has to be in place and turned on whenever you want to use the client.
Is there another solution possible?

I have to disconnect from the internet because of connection cost. I
subsribed to a limited upload formula, and I share some ressources with other
computers. I'm currently unumployed :-( and can't pay for unlimited internet
access. That's why I disconnect sometimes.. As my modem uses universal serial
bus, I can't plug more than one computer to the device.

The PC (the one which is linked to phone line) stays turned-on after
Internet disconnect, for other works, and the notebook stays connected to the
PC for file/print sharing... And I don't know other low cost solution at the
moment... (any idea ?)

Maybe there is a relation, maybe not, but sometimes, the notebook gets a
fatal error with 'svchost.exe' (user: Network Service). I see the message
only when restarting the notebook, but the event viewer seems to analyse it
at Windows shutdown (when service is stopped).
Maybe there is a problem with the notebook's Windows settings...

What do you think about that ?
