I currently have a Windows 2000 machine with is connected by ethernet wire to
a 2wire Homeportal 1000c dsl modem/router. I also have a Windows XP machine
connected by a usb adapter (Linksys USB200HA). Both machines can access the
internet and belong to the same workgroup but I cannot see either machine
when I go into my network places. I just want to be able to share files
across the two machines. Please help.

Are they on the same subnet?

Any firewalls interfering?

Check for browser conflicts.

If no help yet, diagnose the problem.

Chuck the two machines appear to be on different subnets. The Windows 2000
machine has a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the XP machine has a subnet
mask of 255.255.0.0. What exactly does this mean?

Well, that's one reason why the 2 computers can't see each other.
Can you post complete "ipconfig /all" for both computers?
