wireless connection

I have set up a wireless router for someone and it works as long as the
laptop is left on. Once it is turned off the laptop loses the signal or
latches onto another weaker signal in the apartment building.
This is what I received from the folks with the problem...
"When we turn on the computer, and try to get on the web we get a message
saying that there is no connection to the Internet currently available. The
message gives the option of working offline, or try again. We try again,
but we can't connect.
We go to START, Connect to, Wireless Network Connection, and it says that
on SMC we have limited or no connectivity. We view the other networks
available and we are able to connect. As soon as we connect to a network
other than SMC, the SMC bar graph turns to fully green. Until then only the
first bar was green. If we change back to the SMC network, the system
finally connects after a long time of searching, but only with limited or
no connectivity. We try to get to the web and it tells us again that there
is no connection to the Internet currently available.
When we click on the underlined limited or no connectivity and click
repair, the system either doesn't find the IP address or if it finds it, it
connects to another network, not the SMC."
They are running XP Pro on the desktop and laptop. There is a printer shared
through the desktop, which they cannot print to from the laptop since they
are having the connection problem.
The router is connected correctly to the cable modem and to the desktop. The
desktop is having no problems at all. The are using dhcp and when I was
there last we set the laptop's wireless to connect to the adhoc. When I
checked their router, SMC, had a yellow star next to it as the preferred
network. The router is new and the laptop is only about a year old.
What am I missing here?
Thanks

Kevin,
Out of interest what type of router are you using? Is the wireless card in
the laptop an internal one or card?
Is windows xp controling the wireless connection or 3rd party software?
Is XP running the latest service pack and updates?
Cheers
Simon

Why did you set the laptop to adhoc? It should be set to infrastructure.

I'm running a router SMC 1804WBR EU V1 for 2 years and I'm experiencing the
same problems with my Laptops and desktops connected via WiFi to this router
using new PCMCIA cards 11g..
I've one desktop + one Laptop with with both PCMCIA cards Trend TEW423-CB
(11b+11g) and one Laptop with Broadcom internal WiFi card (11b+11g).
I'm running infrastructure Wifi network with Open and WEP 64bits Hex
encription around the SMC router and with WZC of Win XP pro or Home with SP1
+ SP2.
It was/ It is still working perfectly when using my old PCMCIA Wifi cards
from ELSA (11b only) .
I've been working on that for 2 months withous success... I'ld greatly
appeciayte ideas or clues ...
THanks in advance
Castor
PS: problems are the same either using WZC or Trend utility to manage WiFi
parameters on eich system.
All my systems are getting troubles to connect as described above
