I have 2 machines, both running XP Home SP2, both connected to a router
with a hardware firewall. I have internet connectivity from both, and
machine \\APHRON can see shares on machine \\LANDAU, but not
vice-versa.

From APHRON, "ping landau" works.
From LANDAU, "ping aphron" says "pinging aphron [192.168.0.2] ..." but
times out.
From LANDAU, "ping 192.168.0.2" times out
From LANDAU, "ping 192.168.0.1" works (that's the router)
On both machines, the Windows Firewall is ON, but File Sharing is
enabled and the network connection "Local Area Connection" is
un-checked.
APHRON is running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0 and Microsoft
Antispyware Beta 1, but no other firewalls.
LANDAU is running Norton Antivirus 2005, and used to be running the
Norton Firewall, but I uninstalled it.

Mike,

My money is on the Norton Firewall causing problems on Landau.

First try repairing LSP / Winsock, using all 4 possible tools / procedures here:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>

If repairing LSP / Winsock, and resetting TCP/IP, doesn't help, recheck your un
install of NPF. Did you un install NPF carefully, and religiously follow all
instructions from Symantec? Symantec products are well known in this forum for
not removing themselves properly when using an un install wizard (either one in
a Norton Program Files folder, in an All Programs shortcut folder, or in Control
Panel Add / Remove Programs). You generally have to download special
instructions / an extra wizard from Symantec.

If no help yet, please peruse my troubleshooting guide.

I found a fossil service, McAfee Personal Firewall, on \\LANDAU. When I
stopped it, everything started working.

I had previously had a McAfee problem on that machine where the install
of VirusScan and Personal Firewall Plus from their internet site would
fail part-way through. I didn't realize there were pieces of it lying
around.

Thanks for your help! I found this while going through your list of
suggestions and linked articles; one of them emphasized the importance
of having the ICS service (Windows Firewall) running, and while trying
to find it in the Services list, I ran across the McAfee Firewall.

Mike,

Well, that's certainly a circuitous method of getting a result, but I'm glad you
got there. Thanks for updating us.
