How do I tell Windows XP Home to retrieve automatic Windows updates via the
web proxy?
In our office, port 80 (web) is firewalled, and all computers must access
the web via an HTTP proxy. We use the proxy for caching and for blocking
inappropriate sites.
As of now, I can see Windows accessing strange sites on port 80 (and access
is denied). When I do a WHOIS query, the site usually doesn't have anything
to do with Microsoft. I assume Microsoft is leasing these servers. When I
unblock a few of them, updates work. However, unblocking poorly identified
sites is "unclean," and I just want Windows to use the proxy.
In case someone is curious, here are some of the IPs:
67.72.4.94
143.127.8.50
209.245.20.94
4.79.24.30
I verified in Internet Explorer that "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connections" is unchecked.
My proxy is modern and should support both HTTP 1.0 and 1.1.
As far as I can tell, Windows Updates doesn't even try the proxy.
