Greetings
Thanks for your help. I've gone through multiple forum pages as well
as Chuck's blog and two pages of Google sites for their suggestions on
what to do. I have 2 computers, both running XP Pro. They are
connected by a router with a hardware firewall. The computer's
firewalls are turned off. The Main-comp is a desktop that is cabled to
the wireless router. It can see, access and transfer files from my
laptop. TIT has all the settings as the master browser enabled. I've
checked the registry files suggested (in LSA) as well as the TCP/IP
settings
It has the following browstat reading.
Status for domain HOME on transport \Device\NwlnkNb
Browsing is active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus. Using
\\MAIN-COMP
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master MAIN-COMP

My laptop on the other hand gets the dreaded can't access the network
message with the addition that the network address isn't correct. I've
turned off the master browser control in the Control Panel on this
machine as suggested in Chuck's article on browser conflicts. I've
also checked the other registry values as well as services in the
Control Panel that were listed. I am able to ping the main computer
both by IP address and by name. This is what I get with browstat on my
laptop.

To start, please remove NWLink IPX/SPX from Main-Comp. IPX/SPX won't help here.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
Next, it appears that your laptop has a name resolution problem. Start by
checking for corrupt LSP / Winsock. And check Node Type on both computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>
Then please post updated "browstat status", plus "ipconfig /all", for both
computers.

Chuck,
Thanks for the response. The following are the data from my main
desktop. I took off the IPX/SPX as you suggested. The node type is
unknown. I went to the MS paper to see what the Enable proxy setting
was and I can't find a registry key labeled as such at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
Does this key need to be inserted? There was also no key labeled as
node type or DHCP node type in this folder. As before, this machine
can still access the laptop.

David,
If the Node Type is not the problem (ie not Peer-Peer), I wouldn't worry about
that. You can run as Unknown with no problem. Which Winsock repair did you
try? Some folks have reported success with one tool or the other, but not
always with the first one that they try. There are three freeware products,
plus the native XP repair procedure (which comes in both pre-SP2, and SP2,
flavours).

Chuck,
Thanks for the quick response. I just did the resh winsock reset
catalog in the command prompt on the laptop. I'll try one of the
freeware programs on both machines.

Sorry about the delayed response. Been out of town the last 48 hours.
I ran the resh, WinsockXPfix, and LSPfix. I failed to mention in my

computer since the kids use it. I uninstalled this and the main
computer seems to be humming along. I get the following browstat

David,
This looks better. It's symmetrical, both computers are reporting the same
browser, and the browser sees both computers. The "error = 5" says that when
you are running browstat, your account doesn't have administrative access to
Main-Comp. Are you using Classic, or Simple, File Sharing?

If Main-Comp is using Guest authentication, either SFS on, or SFS off with only
Guest (or a non-admin non-Guest account) providing network access, the "error =
5" is predictable.
Try and define your symptoms. Run CDiag, and either interpret it yourself, or
post CDiag logs here, and I'll help.

Miracle of Miracles!!!!!! It works now. I went to Chuck's site as the
error 5 message seems to be a password issue. I went to the Windows
file sharing file
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/windows-xp-file-sharing-not-so-simple.html>
and realized that I had blank passwords. Putting in passwords for
everyone fixed it and now I am connected inside, outside, and upside
down. Thanks, Chuck for all your time, effort and knowledge. If you
ever need your gallbladder out, let me know (I do that sort of thing
for a living).

David,
Thanks for the update, and for your kind words.
I'm rather attached to my gallbladder (and I try to not abuse it too much with
strong drink) ;-) , but I'll keep your offer in mind.
