Okay, the clips in the collection will play on their own, but when I try to
play what I have put together, I only get audio. Can anybody help me?

AVI. They were working in the preview earlier, then they just stopped.

those are usually codec issues... check the file with the GSpot utility and
see what codec it was compressed with... there's a link to GSpot on the
Setup > Other Software page of my website.

That was very rude.

I'm using AVI and WMV video files on WMM V.2, with an MP3 as the soundtrack.
The clips I have chosen have been placed on the timeline and edited, and
during this process I watched what I had so far in the preview box on the
right side of the screen. When I went to play it recently, on the audio (the
MP3) played, the video remained black.

Is that better?

Yes, better. A bad post gets a like response.

You are probably having a codec problem. You can determine the codec used
to encode the files in question by downloading the GSpot Video Appliance
(use Google to find it). Once you know what codec is used, you will have to
download it from the appropriate website. From your description, it sounds
like it was encoded using either DivX or XviD.

You might find the program Rename Codecs on my website of some use. It
does as the name suggests and therefore the known problem codecs won't have
a role to play in MM. You do not have to know the names of these
codecs...the program takes care of that for you. If you do use it remember
that you must use the RESTORE opion after using MM. Also, take note that the
similar option in version 2.1 of movie maker does not always work.

I'm not so sure that it's a codecs problem, because the video came back after
I messed with the checked filters under options~~> compatability, but then it
went back to just showing black again. Now the program has shut down almost
entirely. MM is fine when it opens, but as soon as you try to play a clip,
the DivX Manager program icon appears in the Windows Start bar and begins to
flash on and off. Looking into running processes, I have found that the DivX
Manager program is actually turning itself off and on. Once that starts
happening, MM stops responding and can only be closed by using
ctrl+alt+delete. As soon as the program closes the DivX manager shuts down
also. Anybody know something that could fix this?

Hello,

OK, but some DivX codecs are a problem and Rename Codecs deals with them
too. But if you think its something else....which of course it could be....
