When I try to capture video, I can see the video in the WMM preview screen,
and the file size counter counts up, but the time counter stays at zero.
When I "finish" I get an error message that says the capture device is not
connected or on (but it is -- I can see it in the preview window). Then I
get an "importing" window and the computer hangs.

Help?

Are you using a firewire/iLink connection from a digital camcorder? If not,
what capture device are you using?

I am using a Sony GVD-1000 DV deck. I tried to connect by USB but could not
get my Dell PC to recognize the USB connection no matter what I did. So, I
connected via a Dell video device (sorta triangular, plugs into a dedicated
card port). Using that connection I can get WMM to "see" the video in the
preview screen, but it won't capture.

The specs for the GVD-1000 show it supports firewire/iLink, which is what
Movie Maker works with when there's a mini-DV type source. Try it on yours
or a friends computer using a firewire connection.
