Can anybody suggest a possible solutions
Just got back from vacation and the computer is not recognizing the CD Rom
and the CD/DVD recorder. I don't think it is a hardware problem since the
hard drives that the units share ATA connections with are working just
fine.
the other funny thing is I ran "Sandra pro" which is a diagnostic program
and they showed up !!
Any thoughts on what could cause this??

my 1st thought is if you were on vacation, who was using the machine ?
Definitely wouldn't go into making any changes with patches you didn't need
previously, till You find out what was changed.
Myself, I lose the drives all the time, but not the CD or DVD every time I do a
reinstall / repair of the OS till I run the via raid tool. Then they all show
up.
IOW something drastic happens then the drives disappear.
