Re: Movie Maker 2 just won't work

I used ZIO CameraMate and captured more than 30 gig of analog video but now
ZIO and Nero both freeze after 30-60 frames. I suspect audio codec
corruption. Moviemaker captures video okay but no audio, produces large
WMTE6.tmp file, then freezes after capture as it processes files. Am I able
to reload codecs?

Hello WarNPeace (Love the name)

It depends on exactly what you are doing when the program freezes.

It is possible that a codec is to blame but unlike Movie Maker Nero is quite
good in that area (I have never had a problem with Nero in fact)

I suspect that your problem is going to be related to hard drive space
(amount free) rather than a codec issue. 30GB is quite a large file and that
in itself is not an issue. I have also captured large files 3 and 4 hr VHS
tapes converted to DV-AVI) The problem will occur when the program tries to
create its temporary files. There can be several of these in use at any one
time and they can be as large as the source file. If you do not have enough
space for these temp files the program will almost certainly fail.

It is very easy tto accumulate "temporary" files without realising and
searching for them can be a real pain....but there is a free solution you
can use...go to my website and download the program called Delete Dross.
Operation is obvious and simple and once you have given it a search
parameter it does not forget it.....so the method for you would be ...

1) Select the hard drive,
2) Add a new search parameter using this text... WMTE*.tmp
3) Select all search patterns you want to use
4) Start the search.

By the time you have blinked you will be presented with a list of files that
match the search criteria. Now, once you are familiar with what you are
doing you will be able to click the option SELECT ALL and then DELETE.
Before you do that though I strongly advice that you look at each file in
the list and ask the question "Do I really want to delete this". The reason
is that once you click DELETE they will be gone for good, they will NOT go
into the recycle bin (a feature that is self defeating I always
feel)...Fact, the files can be retrieved but you will be very lucky if you
retrieve all of them.

Anyway, using the program may result in a large amount of space being freed
up, and thats the object of the exercise. I wrote the program because I am a
little bit of a control freak and being a programmer results in large
amounts of files being created in the compiling of some software....I tried
using the Microsft search feature and grue tired of having to re-enter a
search parameter and even then its speed of search was less than
breathtaking!!! So I wrote my own search and kill program..Delete Dross

Pleased to see the access to the web site was sorted OK.

Hope that helps.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Hello John,
I really appreciate all the time you took to reply to my problem, although I
must apologize for being so brief and misleading in stating the problem. I
wasn't sure if it was okay to post, perhaps in the wrong subject.

First of all, I still have 129 gig hard drive available of 233 total. Also,
I meant a total of 30+ gig that cover 26 files, large and small. The largest
is just over 4 gig.

When Zeo CameraMate with Zeo ProPix DVD software failed in the first few
seconds of the capture, I tried Nero Express 3 with identical results - no
audio and video froze at maybe 60 frames. Win Movie Maker did not freeze,
but no audio was captured.

I restored my system to the last date that capture worked successfully, but
that didn't help either. I am able to use both Zeo and Nero to burn the
video that was captured before the problem began and the result on DVD is
really good. I notice codecs have so many little dll's and other routines so
if a codec is corrupted, perhaps it isn't even used in the burn process.

Sometime today I will download your software and clean up some files. I'll
report again after that. Again, thanks!
Warren

John, I didn't describe my setup completely. The CameraMate converts the
analog video to digital. The connection from camera is RCA, from the
converter to PC is USB. My DV camera doesn't have passthru capability.
Thanks.

Hello,

OK, thats one of the problems then Movie Maker is designed to capture
via a firewire interface. This interface carries a lot of data that USB does
not as well as being capable of carrying data at a sustained rate, something
USB does not do well.

To capture the audio you need to bypass the converter and send the audio
direct to your "Line-IN" and configure Movie Maker to look at that location
to get the signal.

Many people who have none the less captured in a still similar to you
came unstuck when the upgraded to SP2. The reason for that is that SP2
conforms more properly to international standards....one of those standards
is the firewire system.

On the information given it seems you need a better capture
device....unless there is something else you wish to add.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Thanks again, John. It looks like I have several things to do to get this
solved. Funny that it worked so well long after SP2 had been installed.
Since my line-in does not accept RCA audio L & R then I need to do so
shopping for a different analog capture device. Oh well. I spent 8+ hours a
day for nearly 40 years on fun things like this so I'll consider it an
opportunity. I chose WarNPeace because I didn't like wornout or worndown
(all sound likes for Warren).

Hello,

Why don't you just buy a converter plug?...they are a lot cheaper than
buying a new card.
