please help, drowning in jargon!

Admittedly I'm just getting into this video and picture editing but the
jargon is overwhelming!

I want to be able to capture my new digital handycam images (HC19 if
anyone is interested!) and create something fun - e.g. video clips with
sound and some effects. Movie Maker seems fit for the purpose but I lose
quality both in creating slide shows and in video - this is where it
starts to get very confusing. From what I have discovered Movie Maker
2.1 should retain the picture quality of static pictures (mine are
5MBps) but I can expect some degredation in quality in video. It's
disappointing to create a nice slideshow from sharp still images
(5Mbps) and for movie maker to cause loss of quality.

I'm buying a DVD writer so hopefully my existing CD RW won't be an
issue with quality. I'm buying a firewire card and cable. I have not
bought any specific software yet because Microsoft Movie Maker seems ok
until I really understand what my needs are.

I guess I need some basics.

I feel your pain!!

I too am in the process of creating my first movie - I want to put it on DVD
to playback on a TV. I have to tell you that once I got the firewire, the
video did seem to improve. I have made one DVD, played it on the TV, it
looks great. Now, I want to add menus, titles, etc. -- well, its back to the
drawing board for me.

What I had to get so far was the extra large hard drive, the firewire - then
I needed the conversion software to convert the .avi for the TV DVD - Now, to
get my motion menus, etc. I need even more software. Last night I downloaded
a trial copy of uLead Video Studio - its at www.ulead.com - You might want to
start by getting the software you are going to need first -- movie maker
would not convert the .avi over to the format I needed. Also, editing the
clips for my movie seemed easier with uLead...

Good Luck!! Its a really time consuming process - but so far, its fun....
I was laughing so hard making my movie that my husband had to come see if I
was okay, guess he thought I was going to bust my gut (I nearly did).
