Strange msconfig message at logon

Hi all, recently built a new computer and did my first install of
Windows XP (SP1a Home). As a longtime Win98 user I'm in the habit of
turning off unwanted startup programs using MSconfig. (Realplayer etc.)
All was fine until yesterday when I installed a couple of programs,
including Adaware and Norton Systemworks 2003. Since then, every time
any user logs on, there's a message box saying that I have started the
comp in diagnostic or selective startup mode, please start in normal
mode. There's a checkbox to start next time in normal mode, and
buttons to either reboot or cancel. I do not check the box, click
cancel, and then MSconfig appears. This too I dismiss by canceling.
But there's no option to stop this from happening every time I log on!
Could Systemworks be doing this?

Hi Dave,

Msconfig is not intended for diagnostic use only. It is not intended
to block programs for loading on a long trim basis. There are setting
in Realplayer's Tool - Preferences that should stop it from loading
and going out and check for updates and the like. The same goes for
any program that you don't want to launch.

I would not suggest using Norton System Works for anything. In my
option, it is a peace of junk!

why do you not select to start in normal mode at the next boot?
you can start in safe mode, go to msconfig, and see if start in diagnostic
mode is selected on the General tab..if it is, choose either normal or
selective.

Instead of msconfig give this a shot:

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

You can then disable stuff in the startup without deleting it if you don't
want and you don't get the diagnostic startup message.

If you open msconfig just to look, close it by clicking Cancel or the X at
the top of the window.

If you uncheck anything in startup, you will get a message at the next
startup. That's okay. You know that you unchecked something and by doing
this you've put the system into "selective startup" mode.

At the next startup when the prompt appears, do not select normal mode and
check the box to not show the warning startup prompt again. Click OK to
exit the screen. The "nag" will disappear until something else is removed
from startup. Note that this expected behavior could actually work in your
favor if something or someone disables a wanted program without your
knowledge.

There are other methods for disabling startup programs. For example: Open
the main program. Find the settings menu that controls startup behavior and
disable it from there. You've disabled that program from running at startup
and have maintained normal startup mode by not using msconfig to disable.
