I have Spy sweeper, MS antispyware, norton antivirus and others in my
computer.
Those antivirus or anti-adware programs scan the whole hard disks on my
computer.
Very often, I visit a website and download files. They are zip, rar or exe
files.
My question is how to check viral or spyware infection on a "single file"
which was just downloaded.

One of the options should be to scan for viruses.

Most scanners running in "live" mode will scan the file as it is copied from
the temp download location to the permanent folder that you selected for
placement. This should catch it if it is infected. However, for a second
opinion, or if your scanner is not active, right click the file - an AV scan
should be one of the options.

Dear Rick and others,

Thanks for the tip. I see virus checking when right clicked.
I have a related question. Recently, Microsoft anti-spyware (MAS) was
installed. Both NAV (norton antivirus) and MAS are now started up programs
(i.e., both are always in live mode). In the past, NAV was only in live
mode. What I noticed recently (after MAS was installed) was that
installation of many programs (corel draw, acrobat, photoshop, etc) took a
long time to complete. I felt it so slow that I sometime click setup.exe
again. I am wondering whether MAS is the culprit for slowing down or not.
Do you have any comment on this? Craig

Could be, MAS is a beta product, so it could definitely cause performance
problems. So could NAV - seen it many times.
