A Video Capture Device Was Not Detected

I've seen dozens of posts with this message/problem: "A video capture device
was not detected". I have not yet found anything that has helped me.

Here's my situation:

- Panasonic PV-GS9, connected via Firewire, in playback mode, powered on,
and powered by A/C connector (not battery).
- Firewire port on computer is integrated with SoundBlaster Audigy sound card
- Windows XP Professional, SP2, all "Windows Updates" applied
- NVIDIA GT6400 graphics card
- Windows Movie Maker 2.1

Panasonic rep confirmed that I have done everything that the camera requires.

When I first connected camera, I got "balloons" in the system tray
indicating "DV device" "Panasonic PV-GS9", etc. It is clear that the OS has
recognized the camera, and it appears that the cable is working properly. I
also get the plug-and-play dialog that asks what action you want to take.

(So far, everything looks great.)

However, when initiating the "Capture Video" wizard, I get the message "A
video capture devide was not detected."

Other things I've checked and tried:
- Tools|Options|Compatibility. Nothing there to "de-check".
- Movie Maker 2.1 has a release note about capture problems with NVIDIA
graphics card. However, I have applied all Windows updates as instructed.
- I've taken my camera to the store from which I purchased. They were able
to capture through Windows Movie Maker. Therefore, I know it can be done with
this camera and with WMM. (However, there was no way to try to compare
configurations of the store's machine versus mine...)
- Control Panel / Device Manager indicates everything functioning (no
question marks, IEEE1394 shows working properly...)
- Tried various sequences of shut-everything-down, power-up-machine,
power-up-camera, etc.

Can anyone solve this?

The next step I can think of is to make sure you have the most updated
driver(s) from the manufacturers website (Not from Microsoft).

Hal,
You are not alone. This is a known issue with firewire & SP2.
"The next step I can think of is to make sure you have the most
updated
driver(s) from the manufacturers website (Not from Microsoft)."
Wojo, FYI; DV Camera manufacturers do not include drivers for the
cameras.
These drivers are supposed to be loaded by the XP OS. (In this case
firewire)
Hal,
Even though device manager reports the drivers are working correctly,
well I guess you know their not. Check out Mr. Graham Hughes help page
at;

Thanks Treeman, something to add to my internal knowledge database :-)
