Windows Explorer crashes

Nearly every time I try to load Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer!) it
crashes the computer with 'A problem has been detected and Windows has been
shut down to prevent damage...'. etc. , sometimes immediately, sometimes
after long use and at random times (though, accessing A: seems to crash it
pretty regularly). Suggestions would be appreciated.

I have found that this helps:

Explorer as a Separate Process :

It could also be many other things including malware of various types so if
running the desktop as a separate instance of explorer doesn't do the trick
then I'd scan. Heck you might even want to do a malware scan first as
running the desktop as a separate instance will take about 8 MB of
additional RAM.
