After seeking proffesional help and not wanting to spend a few extra dollars
on new recovery cds I installed a version of Windows XP that came in the
startup cd's for my laptop. Now my computer runs incredibly slow, much slower
than before. Does this have to do with the version that I installed? Can I do
anything to fix it without having to install anotehr XP version?

You haven't really given any information- even laptops have manufacturers..

In general it may be that the correct/best drivers are not be installed-
things like the mainboard chipset, graphics chips etc etc. These would be on
the manufacturer provided CD- try and work out what specific drivers are
needed rather than the general ones that Windows may have installed-
although it usually makes a reasonable choice they may not be the
best/fastest ones. Look at the website of your unnamed maker- perhaps there
are drivers you can download.

Just a thought but you could check out the Power Options properties. To save
power on laptops the CPU can be slowed down. Maybe this is happening.

You should certainly install the appropriate drivers
Find out the what motherboard you have and go to the manufacturers web site
if you don't have the cd with you. Most manufacturers will allow you to
download relevant drivers.
