In tracing and trying to find my problem entering sleep mode, I just found
something unexpected. If I power-on the PC but do not logon right away, the
computer will enter sleep mode after the allotted time I have configured in
Control Panel. For times that I do actually log on, the computer will only
enter S1 sleep mode (i.e. the fans will keep spinning). Has anyone seen
anything like this before?

The answer to this is, to be sure all users on your Windows XP computer have
identical settings within Control Panel | Power Options. That is- the Power
Management settings must have "Stand-by / Sleep or hibernate" exactly the
same for all users, including time-outs and Advanced Options. Choose the
same scheme for all users.
