Color saturation after saving the movie

Just installed new XP. Have Radeon 128MB video card, Pentium 4 , etc.
I downloaded short clips from a Canon Ixus 300 directly through the
multimedia slot . The clips play fine before Movie Maker touches them. Once
they are saved with MM (either unedited or stitched together), the playback
is color saturated to the point of looking like a color negative.
I have not tried downloading from camcorder yet so don't know if it's a
source problem or not.

Can't find any way to fix this by fiddling the usual bits.

I also downloaded from a camcorder and found that playback after MM2 was just
as psychedelic.
