Long restart delay / failure

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP SP2. Some while ago it
suddenly became impossible to restart it using the normal restart
function. The computer would power down and then start to power up, but
never get beyond stage one: the fan would come on and there would be
optical drive activity for a moment, but nothing else. I would have to
switch it off and leave it off for about half an hour, or it would just
do the same thing every time. When left for a sufficiently long time,
it would boot up as normal. There was no indication that it was overly
hot.

Today I was prompted to update the Java environment, which I did. I
then shut the computer down (without trying to restart as I figured
that would be a wasted effort). Some hours later I tried to boot up,
but this time it is even less responsive. The fan gradually gets going,
but that's all.

If anyone has any ideas about any of this I'd love to hear them.

Many thanks,

Jez
