Display has gotten ugly - in a sci-fi sort of way (Revisited).....XP S2 with an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500 graphics card

As described in my previous posting , I had a display problem. I'm running a
1.83GHz Athlon, 512MB Ram, with XP S2 and an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500
graphics card. It seems from my continued observations that the display
problem has been 100% software problem, not hardware. The whole thing
originally started suspiciously soon after the latest round of ms updates
but after dl'ing brand new drivers from ATI ( probably updated to deal with
the latest ms update geekathon), the problem was just as bad. However, after
deleting and reinstalling the drivers a couple times and letting the MS and
ATI software fight it out for a couple days, function seems to have returned
to normal. As is often the case with technology, give it a whack, let it sit
for a while, then try it again.

I wonder if the fact that I have over 50 gigs of multimedia content on the
80GB hd slowed the fight down. I notice that many graphic progs need to
shake hands with any associated files and thus generate a corresponding file
or files on the harddrive. Also I've been told that the ATI software adapts
to changing parameters somehow, and that process may be, like a trial and
error search for a solution, slower in some cases.

As a final observation, during the fight between ATI & MS, opening outlook
express always caused the display to revert to the "sci-fi ugly look"
quicker than running multimedia files did.

At any rate, I hope this helps those with similar trouble, and thanks to
those who offered their thoughts.

Regards,
Mike
