"PapaJohn - WNV for DVD (PAL)" cutom profile

Hi (PapaJohn and others)!

I am testing the "PapaJohn - WNV for DVD (PAL)" custom profile (as a work
around for the "27th frame drop" problem). My source material is a DV-AVI
file from a DV camcorder.

My question:

Once the resulting WMF file is opened in TMPGEnc for encoding using the
wizard, TMGPEnc performs a "Judging field order" operation.
TMPGEnc finds that the source is "Interlaced, Bottom fiel first (field B).
Is this correct? I have heard from PapaJohn that the custom profile
"de-interlaces anyway if the input DV-AVI files are interlaced" (see infra).
So why should TMPGEnc find that the file is interlaced?

Thank you in advance.

Michel

--------------------------------------

Thanks Michel,

Yes on using the WMV as the input file to either TMPGEnc or your DVD
software... whatever you usually use to transcode to the MPEG-2 files. If
your DVD software accepts WMV files, try it directly.

The video codec used is Quality VBR using the Windows Media Video9 Advanced
Profile.
The audio codec used is the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless - VBR Quality
100, 44 kHz, 2 channel 16 bit
I checked 'allow interlaced processing' but my testing so far shows it
de-interlaces anyway if the input DV-AVI files are interlaced.
Video size - 720x576
25 fps
Key frame interval - 6 seconds
Video quality of 95

The bitrate and file size of the finished WMV should end up about the same
as the transcoded MPEG-2 files, about 1/3 as large as a DV-AVI file.

Hi Michel,

MPEG-2 for DVD is usually interlaced... and it seems the bottom field first
is the default for TMPGEnc. My guess is that, after assessing the input
file, it just applies the default, not because the input file is that way,
but because the interlace option is on by default for the MPEG-2 file.

I've looked at the WMV file versus a DV-AVI and do see it as
de-interlaced... I haven't tried unchecking the interlacing option in
TMPGEnc and seeing what happens in the steps beyond it.

Hi PapaJohn,

In TMPGEnc, in the Video stream settings > Encode mode, should I choose
"Interlace" or "Non-interlace"?

I tried on "non-interlace" and TMPGEnc crashed at the 50% point with a
message saying that the instruction in memory was unsupported... then I did
the same source file with it interlaced and it rendered fine. My guess is
that MPEG-2 headed toward a DVD needs to be interlaced.

Ok I will try so: source "non-interlaced / encoding method "interlace".

FYI: I also tryed on "non-interlace" and TMPGEnc did not crash. But I use
constant bit rate. On older versions of TMPGenc, there was a crash at 50%
only in variable bit rate encoding. Noting to do with interlace or not I
guess.

Very strange;
I tried with source "non-interlaced" / encoding method "interlace" in
TMPGEnc 2.5
The resulting mpeg file is.... non-interlaced (it can be seen clearly with
VirtualDub).

So, what should I do....?

Thanks

Something else also strange:

I have loaded the WMV file created from the PapaJohn WMV for DVD (PAL)
profile into the time line, to save it to dv-avi. It seems that the
resulting dv-avi is not interlaced!

When this dv-avi is loaded into TMPGEnc (source: interlarced, encoding:
interlaced), the resulting mpeg is NOT interlaced!!!!

???

How are you determining the file is interlaced or not??? I think an
interlaced file made from a deinterlaced one would still look deinterlaced
if you look at each frame.
