Hardware malfunction

My computer totally stops functioning and a gray screen appears saying:
“***Hardware malfunction*** Contact hardware vendor for support *** system
has halted ***”
I put this computer together and had no problems until I installed XP. When
it locks it also makes whatever sound it had when it locks. Is there a way to
see what is causing the lock? I’ve tried the troubleshooting
FAQ on the software and got nowhere. When it locks it locks I’ve found no
way to continue other then killing the power to the motherboard and
restarting. There is no rhyme or reason to the lock no common timing or
software or hardware. This is the second tine sending this, It locked last
time. Help me Obi-Wan
I have become fond of XP and would be disappointed to have to go back to ME.
Thank You

Dear Lord
how can we help when we have no idea as what you are using for
hardware..........
Have you tried looking in event viewer to see if it lists the specific piece
of hardware??
have you tried removing your PCI cards one by one rebooting in between to
see if one of them is the problem??
Have you looked under device manager to see if a piece of hardware has an
exclamation beside it??
have you tried going in the BIOS and looking at all of the settings to see
if one of them is wrong??
Did you update all of your hardware drivers to XP drivers or are you still
using ME ones??
When you build your own system ...you are your own tech support!!!
What does this mean??"it also makes whatever sound it had when it
locks"??????....could it be a sound card problem?? do you havea sound card??
or is this a loooooong endless beeeeep from the computer speaker??

do give us more info to work with....the psychic hotline is too expensive!!!

It's so much easier to suggest solutions when you don't know too much about
the problem

The most likely cause of this error message is a hardware fault,
something that has nothing to do with Windows; and you would probably
receive the same or similar error messages regardless of what
operating system you were running.

One documented instance of this specific error message was caused by a
faulty IDE hard drive cable. Replacing the cable resolved the
problem.

Good luck
