I can buy a Sony TRV 480 locally for 319 but have to mail order a
discontinued TRV 460 for 327 and up. Are they the same? Is the 480 as
good as the recommended TRV 460?

Are they both backwards compatible with Video and Hi8?

My TRV460 is great. It is backward compatible with Hi8.

I just purchased the TRV 480. I believe the 480 just came out in Feb.
It is supposed to play any 8mm. It has the pass through capability, but
only if the older camera is Ilink compatible which my Cannon analog is
not. This cam is supposed to be able to use either Hi8 or standard 8mm.
It will connect to the computer by Ilink, Iee1394 cables.
I'll have to learn to use the software which includes USB Driver,
Picture Package and Image Mixer VCD2

Why do you need to learn the software which came with the cam and use USB2?
If you don't have a firewire port on the pc they are only a few dollars and
well worth the expense for the quality benefit.
