btkrnl.sys causing system not to boot etc etc etc

Hi everyone.
I have a problem that has just appeared. When I try to boot it gets to
the xp screen with the blue moving bar and then restarts. I've tried
safe mode and notice that it gets to the file ........./btkrnl.sys
stops, then restarts.
I have also tried to repair the problem through the recovery console
but, although it recognizes the drive (C:/) it doesn't show the windows
folder and will not allow access to the console commands.
I've tried the drive in another computer (set as a slave) and it
doesn't show up in explorer but can be seen along with the other drives
in disk management console. The drive cannot be allocated a drive
letter.
If I try to install xp in the hope of repairing the system files, setup
displays a message saying it cannot be installed in this partition and
recommends I format or delete the partition; an option I'd rather not
consider just yet.
Is there anyway around this problem? Is it possible to get access to
the drive to copy important files that can be pasted back into a
reinstalled xp?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You could try a Repair Install. Check here and pay close attention to
