Playing wmv files on dvd player
Karen

I've read several threads about this problem and am still confused. Some say
that it can't be done, that no dvd player can play wmv files and yet the new
dvd players specifically say that they'll support and play wmv, jpg, mp3 and
many others. I don't have a dvd burner, so I'm trying to create a cd with a
video (vcd) that will play on a dvd player. I've even converted the wmv to a
mpg but that doesn't work either. Can anyone help me?

Karen;
Many modern DVD players claim Windows Media certification, but they are
for WMA (audio files) only. The only known unit for sale in the US that
supports WMV is the Buffalo LinkTheatre. I currently own a Philips DV
player that supports a staggering number of formats (DivX, .avi, .mpeg,
etc), byt it does not support WMV files.

Radio Shack carries a Sony model that says it plays video cd's. I can
convert the wmv to another format but I can't find any format that will play
on a dvd player.

That is because, as you read in those "several threads" you need a DVD
authoring program.
You don't need a DVD burner, the authoring program can create a VCD for you
and THAT will play in your DVD player. I have to admit my eyebrows went up
when you said "new dvd players specifically say that they'll support and
play wmv" since I have not seen this and I spend entirely too much time in
electronics stores. But then pouted when you changed the story completely to
"Radio Shack carries a Sony model that says it plays video cd's". Most DVD
players play Video CD's but that would be a VCD not WMV.
VCD's, as Papajohn said are MPEG-1 files while DVD's are MPEG-2 files but
simply converting to MPEG-1 or 2 and burning to a CD will not work with most
DVD players, hence the need for software.
If it is the cost your concerned about there is a whole list of authoring
programs on my website in the "DVD Programs" section along with info and
links to the author's website. Most offer free trial downloads so you can
create your VCD without spending a dime.
